Outdoor gas BBQ grills are an amazingly convenient appliance for those who like to cook outside. Though the weather and years of use degrade the performance of the parts involved, which include the traditional cast iron gas burners. Luckily, these days, there are replacement gas burners made of stainless steel that provide better longevity and performance.
Brands like Bull, Cal Flame, Lion, Blaze, Turbo, Beefeater, Thermos, Char-Broil, Jenn Air, and Nexgrill all use the same type of gas burners. Thanks to the ability to buy direct from manufacturers via Amazon, you can get new stainless steel BBQ burners for a fraction of the price of traditional outdoor kitchen retailers.
Stainless steel BBQ burners last up to 10 times longer than the cast iron versions that break down and turn into powder over time. Not only do they last longer, but they also perform as well as the cast-iron counterparts. Symptoms of a bad gas burner is a weak or non-existent flame in certain areas on your BBQ.
Check out our YouTube video below, where we go through the step-by-step process of changing out 4 old cast iron burners for 4 new high-performing stainless steel gas burners. This was performed on a Cal Flame 4-burner outdoor grill, but all of the parts and details explained apply to all of the following brands: Bull, Cal Flame, Lion, Blaze, Turbo, Beefeater, Thermos, Char Broil, Jenn Air, and Nexgrill.
Here is a list of the items you will need for this gas burner swap:
-Hands
– screwdriver (possibly if adjustments are needed)
This is the difficulty level for this project:
- Easy, level 1 (from 1-10 score)
Project should take this long:
5-10 minutes
Here are a few of pointers and tips to make this project work out well for you.
- Replace the burner and turn on the gas to test the flame.
If the flame is too yellow, you need more oxygen. The stainless steel gas burners have an adjustment slot that you can open up by using a Phillips screwdriver. The larger the gap, the more oxygen. Adjust this until you get a nice, smooth blue flame.
- Try and clean out your barbecue before doing the work. This will keep the mess down as you work in the area.
- Work in decent lighting conditions. Too dark and it will be more work than it needs to be, at the same time when it’s really bright, it can be difficult to see the flame and dial it in just right so working in the morning or evening can sometimes be beneficial for flame adjustment.
