Ever have the mixing part of your KitchenAid stand mixker start to fall down and not work? You most likely need to replace the part called a Planetary Assembly. This will apply to your KitchenAid Professional 600, Pro5 Plus, Professional HD, or Epicurean stand mixer.

In today’s article and embedded video, I walk you step-by-step through this easy KitchenAid mixer repair of replacing the planetary assembly so you can get the rotation around the bowl going again! Worse yet if your KitchenAid planetary falls off, this guide will help you get it mixing like new again by replacing the failing planetary assembly with a new one.

🔧 Steps to replace the planetary assembly:

  1. Unplug power to KItchenAid stand mixer
  2. Remove screw in back of unit and take off beauty band. Then remove 4 screws that were under the band.
  3. Lift cover off machine and take off 4 screws holding down the transmission cover. Scrape out grease in exposed areas. (2 minute mark in video above). Remove gasket.
  4. Take attachment hub gear out of transmission housing and clean off grease. Remove worm gear assembly and set aside or clean.
  5. Get snap ring gear and remove snap ring on planetary assembly shaft. Remove snap ring
  6. With flathead screwdriver pry in and remove the bevel gear. Then take the small point out of the planetary shaft. This allows the follower ear to be removed. Do so.
  7. Clean area from old grease and apply new food grade grease to gears and parts.
  8. If inner gear has sunk, take center punch and mallet and tape around the gear until it recedes back into its original place.
  9. Insert new planetary assembly until flushing with the mixer housing. Replace follower gear and pin.
  10. Align hardware so the bevel gear will sit flush on the equipment, then reinstall the snap ring. Apply more grease on gears and parts. Place worm gear assembly back into its place. (9:35 min mark in video).
  11. Put new gasket on transmission housing then take 4 screws and tighten back onto the mixer. Replace cover and tighten4 screws normally hidden by the beauty band.
  12. Replace band and tighten screw in back. You are done! Time to test out your work by plugging it in and turning on the machine!
